When Fr Cherian Padiyara was the Regional Superior of the DARJEELING JESUITS, he requested Bishop Eric Benjamin, the Bishop of Darjeeling, to start a parish with a multi-ethnic community at Matigara.
North Bengal St Xavier’s College, a self-financed degree college, affiliated to the University of North Bengal, and was established in July 2007 by the Darjeeling Jesuits of North Bengal, in a temporary building in the premises of Jisu Niketan School, Matigara, with Fr Cherian Padiyara as the first Principal.
St Joseph’s School, North Point, Darjeeling, was established by the DARJEELING JESUITS of North Bengal in 1888 at a place locally known as Sunny Bank in Darjeeling town. There were eighteen boarders and seven day scholars on the rolls.
Darjeeling Jesuits have a great affection for their Province. There are several reasons. One definitely is the people whom we serve and another nature’s bounty, from snow-capped mountains to the lush green tea gardens of the Terai and Dooars which make Darjeeling a paradise. The temperature is a blessing, neither very cold in winter not too hot in summer.
The Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) was founded in 1540 at a time when the Church was going through a turbulent time with the Protestant reformation, renaissance etc. Jesuits, placed at the service of the Church and the Roman Pontiff, served the Church and defended the faith very successfully and they continue to do so even today.

The first Jesuits arrived in the town of Darjeeling in January 1888 when Fr Henri Depelchin led a group of five to replace the Capuchin Fathers (O.F.M.Cap) of the Vicarate of Patna in the parish and school (St Joseph’s Seminary), which, as St Joseph’s College, was later transferred to its present site at North Point. In January 1889, twenty-four Jesuits arrived in Kurseong from Asansol, to continue their theological studies, first in temporary quarters and then in the newly constructed St Mary’s College, which was blessed and inaugurated on July 31st of that year.
